A succinct biopic of my evolution to me becoming an artist of the 21st Century.
My name is Martin Seager and I welcome you to my website, showcasing my up-to-date portfolio.
I am a completely self-taught artist, never been to art school or university.
My working life started out in the steel/manufacturing industry until my redundancy out of the Aerospace business, 2001. So began the hardest 16 years of my life!!!
I was a bouncer for 2 years, then re-trained as a Personal Trainer, which I did for 5 years, then re-trained again as a Mentor, all to no avail - I suffered a breakdown, and, have struggled since.
In reality, I have wandered, professionally since leaving school, never really finding my vocation/professional identity - something was drastically missing, I didn't belong, until recently.
I was a grade A art student at secondary school, but never thought anything of it or to take it any further. I've sketched/doodled stuff on/off for years, but was always curious if I 'could' actually paint. I have an almost child-like fascination/attraction to colour and a desire to capture the images and places around me or that, which is not within reach. For my 31st birthday my Mom bought me a very! basic acrylic set and the rest as they say is history!! (thankyou Mom!x).
I have since moved on to oil and have never looked back, which is kind of ironic, since oil painting demands calm/patience/tolerance over many, multiple sittings, traits I lack characteristically!! I have also been dealing with a lot of mental heath issues over these last 15 years, so, it has also become a kind of developmental, self-improvement therapy/self-mentoring endeavour!
My work has been described (quite accurately, I think, since it is me!!) as opaque, bold, colourful, measured, sincere, observed, not subtle in the slightest!, applied and scrutinized.
My signature genre is my provocative figurative series of works entitled "La Femme Provocateur". In a country dealing with an obesity epidemic, I wish to make a statement- to capture the very best of 'physical' femininity in it's prime, which unfortunately, we do not see enough of these days!- at least, where I live.
With an acknowledgement/nod to the old-school pin-up girl's of the 40's/50's, these are MY pin-up's of the 21st century!!.
There is nothing 'fake' or cosmetically altered about these ladies, they 'are' real natural beauties who I have met/linked with through various methods- R.A.M, Facebook/Instagram, ex-clients/colleague's/friends-of-friends../my Mom's friends/associates/daughters/nieces and an ex-girlfriend or 2!!!
-I work to a strict mandate/protocol with each model to ensure absolute trust and confidence-NO 3rd party is EVER involved!!. I did, (to begin with) about 3years worth of photographic reference work, in-situ (relative) and have since been using the hard-copy references ever since. (with some artistic manipulation/adjustment- backgrounds/lighting etc...)
My landscapes are all captured images when out on my travels/walks/holidays etc.. cameraphone goes everywhere with me. I also have the kind assistance of 2 associates who are (fortuitously!) ex-professional photographer, who allow me to have any unused images a few times a year.
I now paint on sized, canvas board I make myself. I prefer the rigidity of the board to a canvas on frame.
I almost always use a Cremnitz/Flake white, rarely using Titanium/Zinc whites. Paints- RGH, Winsor & Newton, Old Holland, Michael Harding, Rembrandt, Versari and Sennelier. I have over a dozen or so different mediums- yes! I do have a few commercially bought mediums, including Liquin!!(it's good stuff!!) but, tend to predominantly use my own blended, liquid, recipe mediums I make myself.
I take quite a bit of inspiration from new and old Master's artists- Douglass Hofmann, Rod Hefferen, Joseph.S.Shephard, Daniel Graves, Michael John Angel, Suzanne Broker, Darren Baker, Hamish Blakely, Lawrence Coulson, Vladimir Volegov , the Master's ladies- Artemesia Gentelesci, Elizabeth Vigee-Le Brum and of course the Masters- Rembrandt, Vermeer, Carravagio, Rubens, van Dyke and Gainsborough.
I hope this has given you a broad, but succinct outline of who I am, what I'm about and I welcome any questions you may have - please get in touch through the 'Contact Us' form.
