After establishing the image on the canvas board, I then proceed to 'seal' the image with a very thin glaze of medium tinted with burnt umber. I treat the tint very much like a watercolour wash. The medium I use here is "Flemish Maroger" and the burnt umber is Sennelier. - there is a reason for this - it is ground in non-yellowing safflower oil. It is a lot more transparent than oil ground in linseed and ideal for this purpose.
The wash also makes the board nonabsorbent.
